Diesel engines have many advantages when compared to gas engines. They can improve your fuel economy, and because they are durable they can provide you with a much longer life for the vehicle. They work well, and they are very reliable. However, they do need to have proper maintenance if you want them to last a long time. Let’s look at some of the best maintenance tips that you should use on your vehicles to keep them in great shape.
Warm Up Diesel Engines
When you hop into the vehicle and start it for the first time that day, you do not want to take off immediately. Diesel engines should be warmed up a bit before you drive them, as they can be noisy when they are cold. Start the vehicle, but don’t press the accelerator. You can let it idle for a couple of minutes, which gives the oil time to circulate, and the cylinders will have built up time for improved combustion, and then you can start driving.
Change the Air Filter
The air filter needs to be kept very clean if you want to have efficient combustion in diesel engines. Even if there is only a small amount of dust in the air filter, it can impact the performance of the vehicle. It’s a good rule of thumb to have the air filter cleaned regularly – every 5,000 km. You will need to change it every 15,000 km. However, if you happen to be driving in an area that is extremely dusty, you will want to change it even more often.
Make Sure You Get Your Oil Changed
If you don’t change the oil in your vehicle regularly, it is going to kill diesel engines. Make sure that you are checking your oil, and that you look for an indication of sludge buildup in the cap, or a change in the oil’s viscosity level. Put your vehicle, and your entire fleet for that matter, onto a maintenance schedule that includes an oil change. This is the best way to make sure that you keep your vehicle’s engines in good condition. Skipping the oil change to save time or money is never a good idea.
Sometimes, You Need the Pros For Your Diesel Engines
Even though you can take care of some of the minor maintenance for your vehicles, that doesn’t mean you are going to be able to take care of everything that you need to do for your fleet. Even though who have just one or two diesel vehicles could benefit from taking those vehicles into the pros once in awhile. Let the professionals at J & W Mechanical take care of your diesel engine. Whether it’s the engine, the transmission, differentials, or anything else your vehicle needs, they can help.
